SubOcean to install subsea power cable for EON

2008.07.23 - Contracts

Aberdeen-based subsea installation company, Subocean Limited, has been awarded a fast track contract with EON UK on the Scottish Robin Rigg wind-farm development in the Solway Firth, bolstering the company’s strategy of generating £50 million in sales from the renewable energy sector in the next two years.

The contract, which is believed to be worth approximately £7 million, is to install 64 power cables between the wind turbine generators and one export cable from the wind farm to shore on the Robin Rigg Offshore wind farms, 13.5 kilometres off the coast of Cumbria and 9 kilometres off the coast of Dumfries and Galloway.

“This contract underlines the confidence placed in us by E.ON UK, coming directly as it does on the back of completing another two projects for another UK developer,” says Subocean operations director, Mike Daniel.

According to E.ON, the 180MW Robin Rigg wind farm has the potential to deliver clean green energy to 117,000 UK homes and displace the emission of over 200,000 tonnes of CO2 every year. The Robin Rigg site will be split into two areas with 30 Wind Turbine Generators at each site

“It is crucial that these windfarm developments are delivered efficiently in a way that is safe and has minimum impact on the environment,” adds Daniel. “Subocean Limited was selected by E.ON UK for its operational and technical capabilities with our excellent track record in offshore renewables for delivery.”

“We have already strengthened our team in terms of subsea engineers and onshore management personnel throughout 2008 to plan for the future in the renewables market.

Using it’s well proven installation barge, the Subocean UR 101, Subocean Limited will lay and bury the so-called array cables under the seabed in water depths of up to 20 metres. The UR 101 is fully equipped with Subocean’s expertise and a fully certified cable lay spread including cable ploughing burial equipment.
