Eni has made a new, significant gas discovery in the Sicilian Strait, with the Cassiopea 1 well at a water depth of some 560 metres, about 22 km off the coast of Agrigento.s The Cassiopea field extends across G.R14.AG and G.R13.AG exploration licences, which Eni operates with a 60% stake. Full text

Hess Corporation said today that the Briseis-1 exploration well on Australia's Northwest Shelf discovered natural gas in Jurassic and Triassic sandstones. The well encountered 151 feet (46 meters) of net gas pay, in line with pre-drill estimates. Full text

Revus Energy ASA today confirmed well oil & gas discovery in the eastern part of the Torphins prospect in the central UK North Sea. The well, which spudded on 20th June 2008, was drilled directionally to test sector and penetrated a Paleocene reservoir sandstone section with a gross logged oil & gas column in the region of 9 meters. High oil prices have influenced the decision by the Basker/Manta/Gummy (BMG) oil and gas joint venture in Bass Strait to bring forward a $1.23 billion investment in upgrading its production facilities. The BMG project now involves the use of a mini-FPSO and a separate shuttle tanker. Full text

StatoilHydro has confirmed the existence of gas in the Ververis prospect in the Barents Sea, whereas an exploration well in the Stetind prospect in the Norwegian Sea turned out to be dry. This is the 13th discovery on the Norwegian continental shelf that StatoilHydro is involved in this year. Full text

Lundin Petroleum today announced that its Morskaya-1 exploration well in the Lagansky block, situated in the northern Caspian Sea has encountered a major oil accumulation in the Aptian and Neocomian sandstone reservoirs. Minor amounts of gas were encountered in the overlying Albian reservoir. Morskaya-1 has been drilled to a depth of 2082 metres in a water depth of less than two metres. Full text

Endeavour today announced the 6407/8-4A sidetrack well to appraise the Galtvort natural gas discovery encountered a gas column in Middle to Lower Jurassic reservoir rocks.
