Curlew C is the fourth new North Sea field to be brought onstream by Shell this year

2008.10.01 - Projects

The fourth new North Sea field to be brought onstream by Shell U.K. Limited this year - Curlew C - has achieved production start-up. The Curlew C development marks the first time that Shell has produced hydrocarbons from a chalk formation in the North Sea.

The Curlew C field lies in block 29/7 of the UK Central North Sea, 210 kms (130 miles) east south east of Aberdeen. It was discovered in 1993 approximately 6 kms (4 miles) east of the Maersk Curlew FPSO (floating, production, storage and offtake vessel). The FPSO is owned by Maersk who operate it on Shell’s behalf to handle production from the Curlew complex which to date consisted of Curlew B and D.

John Gallagher, Vice President Technical, Shell Exploration & Production in Europe, said: “For the fourth time this year, Shell has demonstrated its commitment to the North Sea and to boosting energy supply to the UK. Curlew C, a challenging chalk reservoir, underlines our determination to develop North Sea opportunities using Shell’s technology and expertise.”

The field was brought on stream via a single new development well tied-back to the Maersk Curlew FPSO. Processed oil is evacuated by tanker and gas is exported through the Fulmar Gas Line to St Fergus. Shell holds a 100% interest in the field.
